Thank you to the Henry Luce Foundation!

Indigenous Nations Poets is excited to announce we have received a generous award from the Henry Luce Foundation to ensure the sustainability of our growing organization.

As a national literary organization supporting the work of Native Nations poets, we recognize the barriers still in place that make entrance into literary spaces and careers a more difficult achievement for Indigenous writers. This grant supports the continuation and expansion of our programming for Indigenous poets including in-person and online workshops, work with tribal colleges, readings, training in the profession, publication opportunities, and our third-annual mentoring retreat for emerging Indigenous poets. The retreat provides full fellowships for emerging poets, covering the cost of food, lodging, and transportation, as well as honorariums for faculty and guest speakers. The focus for our 2024 retreat is #LanguageBack. We will encourage writing in Indigenous languages and creating from an Indigenous literary and cultural aesthetic.

The grant to IN-NA-PO has been awarded as a part of the Henry Luce Foundation’s Indigenous Knowledge Program, which invests in “knowledge keepers who are committed to preserving and perpetuating their nations’ cultures for the benefit of their communities.” The mission of the Henry Luce Foundation to “deepen knowledge and understanding in pursuit of a more democratic and just world” is fulfilled by “nurturing knowledge communities and institutions, fostering dialogue across divides, enriching public discourse, amplifying diverse voices, and investing in leadership development.”

We at IN-NA-PO are honored to be among the cohort of grantees working to support resilience in Indigenous communities, revitalize our languages, and leverage our knowledge in service to the earth and one other.
